Some movies are easy to explain.
Bugonia is not one of them.
This is the kind of movie where you watch the first few minutes and think you understand what you’re getting into, only for the story to become stranger and darker as it continues.
Directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, Bugonia is a dark comedy and sci-fi thriller about an ordinary man who becomes convinced that a powerful pharmaceutical CEO is actually an alien sent to destroy Earth.
And instead of simply posting about his theory online, he decides to do something about it.
He kidnaps her.
What Is Bugonia About?
The movie follows Teddy, played by Jesse Plemons.
Teddy is a beekeeper who becomes increasingly obsessed with conspiracy theories.
He believes the pharmaceutical company Auxolith is responsible for harming the environment and killing his bees.
But his beliefs go much further.
Teddy becomes convinced that the company’s CEO, Michelle Fuller, played by Emma Stone, is actually an alien from Andromeda.
According to Teddy, Michelle isn’t simply running a powerful company.
She’s part of a plan to destroy humanity.
So Teddy and his cousin Don kidnap Michelle and take her to a basement.
Their goal is simple:
They want her to contact the aliens and convince them to leave Earth alone.
Of course, Michelle doesn’t believe any of this.
And that’s where the movie becomes really interesting.
Emma Stone Is Excellent
For me, Emma Stone is one of the biggest reasons to watch this movie.
Michelle is trapped for most of the story, which means Stone has to carry many scenes in a very limited environment.
She has to convince Teddy that she isn’t an alien while also trying to figure out how to escape.
But the interesting part is that you’re never completely sure what Michelle is thinking.
Is she genuinely terrified?
Is she manipulating Teddy?
Is she hiding something?
Or could Teddy actually be right?
Stone plays that uncertainty extremely well.
Her performance was strong enough to earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. Bugonia also received Oscar nominations for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Original Score.
Jesse Plemons Gives a Very Different Performance
Jesse Plemons is equally important.
Teddy could easily have become an annoying character.
He’s paranoid.
He’s obsessed.
He believes things that most people would immediately dismiss.
But Plemons doesn’t play him as a simple joke.
There is something sad about Teddy.
You can see that he genuinely believes he is saving the world.
That makes some of his actions funny, but it also makes them disturbing.
The movie constantly makes you question whether you should laugh at Teddy or feel sorry for him.
The Movie Is Weird And That’s the Point
This is probably the most important thing to know before watching Bugonia.
Don’t expect a normal Hollywood sci-fi movie.
You’re not getting something like a traditional alien invasion story.
Instead, the movie mixes conspiracy theories, environmental concerns, corporate power, paranoia and dark comedy.
And it does so in a very strange way.
Sometimes you’ll laugh.
Sometimes you’ll feel uncomfortable.
Sometimes you’ll wonder what exactly you’re watching.
That’s part of the experience.
The Basement Is Almost Its Own Character
A large portion of the movie takes place inside the basement where Michelle is being held.
Normally, that could make a movie feel boring.
But here, the confined location actually works.
The basement becomes a psychological battlefield.
Teddy believes he controls the situation.
Michelle knows that she is the intelligent one in the room.
Don is caught somewhere between them.
Every conversation becomes a battle of manipulation.
And because the characters can’t simply walk away, the tension keeps building.
What I Like Most About Bugonia
The biggest thing I like is that the movie doesn’t tell you exactly how to feel about its characters.
Teddy is clearly doing something terrible.
But the movie also shows why he thinks he’s doing the right thing.
Michelle appears to be the victim.
But the movie gives you reasons to question her too.
And that uncertainty makes the story much more interesting.
You’re constantly reassessing the characters.
The Humor Is Very Dark
If you like dark comedy, there’s a lot to enjoy here.
But I don’t think everyone will find the humor funny.
Some scenes are deliberately uncomfortable.
The movie sometimes puts you in a situation where you’re not sure whether you’re supposed to laugh.
That’s very much in line with Lanthimos’ style.
His movies often take uncomfortable situations and push them into absurd territory.
Bugonia is no different.
It Also Has Something to Say
Underneath all the strange comedy is a story about modern paranoia.
Teddy doesn’t trust corporations.
He doesn’t trust the government.
He doesn’t trust the information he receives.
Instead, he creates his own explanation for what is happening.
And once he believes that explanation, everything else becomes evidence supporting it.
That’s one of the more interesting ideas in the movie.
It shows how easily fear and suspicion can turn into absolute certainty.
My Biggest Problem With the Movie
My main problem is that Bugonia can feel too strange at times.
I understand that this is intentional.
But there were moments when I wanted the movie to slow down and give me a little more emotional connection to the characters.
The movie is much more interested in making you uncomfortable and questioning what you’re seeing than giving you a traditional emotional journey.
That won’t work for everyone.
If you prefer straightforward stories, you may find this frustrating.
The Ending
I won’t spoil the ending here.
But I will say that the movie takes its strange premise seriously all the way to the finish.
The story becomes much bigger than a simple kidnapping.
And by the time the final pieces come together, you may find yourself reconsidering everything that happened earlier.
That’s one of the things I appreciate about it.
The movie doesn’t simply give you an answer and walk away.
It leaves you thinking.
Is Bugonia Worth Watching?
Yes — but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone.
If you enjoy unusual movies, dark comedy, psychological thrillers and stories that make you question what is real, Bugonia is definitely worth watching.
If you want a straightforward sci-fi movie with aliens, explosions and a clear hero, this probably isn’t what you’re looking for.
The movie is strange, uncomfortable and sometimes hilarious.
And that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
My Rating for Bugonia
For me, Bugonia gets an 8/10.
Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are excellent, the story is completely unpredictable, and Yorgos Lanthimos creates a movie that feels very different from most mainstream sci-fi films.
My biggest criticism is that its unusual style won’t work for everybody.
But personally, I would rather watch a movie that takes a strange idea and commits to it than one that feels completely safe.
Bugonia is weird, disturbing, funny and surprisingly thought-provoking.
And honestly, after watching it, you may find yourself asking the same question the movie keeps putting in your head:
What if Teddy wasn’t completely wrong?
